Threads From Instagram VS Messenger From Facebook

Written by Trinity Duong

While Instagram stayed independent up until its sale in 2012 to Facebook it remained a photo-sharing social media. However, Facebook has begun to implement its strategy for consumerism onto Instagram, notably through their production of the separate application Threads.

Threads from Instagram describes itself as a camera application for close friends. Created by Instagram, Inc. its latest version contains the best quality and performance improvements. Threads is a fast and easy way to update and stay up-to-date with your close friends. Its focus on the idea of close friends stems from Instagram’s “private stories” only available to those that you decide. This application strays away from a social photo-sharing app more towards an Instagram messenger. You will be able to see messages, statuses, and stories from your close friend’s list and you can chat with anyone on Instagram on the Threads app, even those who haven’t downloaded the app yet. The status of your account will also be controlled by yourself and only be viewed by your close friends. On threads you are able to automatically add captions to anything you say once you record a video or take a picture. The speed at which photos sends will also be quicker and you hold the ability to create a theme through the personalization of your app and icon color.

With a 3.4 star rating on the App Store, Threads is seemingly becoming the new Direct Message. It also has striking similarities to Messenger by Facebook, Inc. While Messenger has been around a lot longer the ability to text, audio and video call remains the same as Threads.

Their free all-in-one communication app has unlimited text, voice, and video calling plus the ability to group chat. By connecting you Instagram friends to Messenger, you can simply search for them by their username in order to message or call. Just like in Instagram, you have the ability to create a “vanish mode” that sends messages that only last for a moment. Opting in to use this tool will ensure the utmost privacy as after the messages are seen they will disappear once you exit the chat. These privacy settings also allow you to choose who can reach you and where your messages are delivered.

Some differences between Threads and Messenger are the chat themes that allow you to choose from fun themes and colors, such as Tie-Dye or Love that make your chats more personal. A really unique feature is the ability to create rooms that host up to 50 people with no time limits. These rooms give you the ability to watch videos, tv shows, and movies with your friends, capturing every moment and reaction in real-time.

This crossover is blatantly obvious by any social media user. And while Messenger and Threads are seemingly the same application, both their productions are separate from their main application (Instagram and Facebook). This is done to produce more consumerism and generate more revenue for Facebook.

However, this direct access to communication and messaging still offers unique features that many avid social media users can take advantage of. The natural streamline into communication will make it easier to communicate and share personal and direct messages.

Communication through social media has become more prominent than ever and this evolution of technology is one that won’t stop advancing for years to come.
