Social Media Trends Expectations in 2022

Written by Trinity Duong

The leading social networks in 2022 have garnered an estimated three point ninety-six billion users. These figures are expected to grow tremendously as access to new mobile devices and social networks increase in traction. Social networks are also expanding in their languages and geographical, political, and economic borders. In relation to the growing social media has seen in the past few years, it is expected that the number of active users will grow to and past five billion users. As many businesses, advertising companies, content creators, and marketers turn to the internet to help grow their work, internet social circles continue to expand.

The Meta group (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and Twitter continue to be the most popular social media platforms and this is predicted to continue on into 2022. We can expect a lot of growth with TikTok as well, however, due to its bans in multiple countries, it is unlikely it grows to the numbers that other popular social networking groups have seen.

Meta

Meta (formerly Facebook) is focusing on building the metaverse in the next coming years and this means introducing augmented reality or virtual reality into the platforms in order to inch closer to their overall goal. Mark Zuckerburg also teased at new projects such as “Project Cambria” and “Project Nazaré”. These projects relate to their own launch of AR/VR headsets.

Facebook

As Facebook introduced Reels for Facebook in September 2021, this will bring in a lot more use as we have seen with its introduction to Instagram earlier in 2021. Facebook is also set to bring in new tools in order to engage younger users and this will most likely fall under their Live features and Audio Rooms. It has been expected that Facebook will also remove details targeting options following the content targeting scandal they faced in the last year. This will mean removing topics targeting users due to their political affiliations, race or ethnicities, religion, and sexual orientation.

Instagram

Adam Mosseri announced earlier in the year that the platform will be shifting towards and focusing on video content. This will potentially be their focus in the new year and as they combine their IGTV with their own feed videos we can expect many new features that will propel this idea forward.

Twitter

Twitter has had the reputation of being a platform where all opinions controversial or not are welcome. This unique part of this social media is something that brings excitement to their users however we can expect them to bring in a bit more monetization in order to take more responsibility for a lot of the problematic tweets published by their users. We can expect many more third-party applications to propel their unique perspective. To enhance the user experience, Twitter plans to have developers create applications for their users.

Social media is a community-based world and it will continue to be one of the main focuses of every phase of life.
