How Social Media Is Changing The Fashion Industry
Written by Trinity Duong
Having an online presence has become an important factor in the modern-day. By harboring a community-driven by social media, creative outlets and opportunities are welcomed and open conversations that transpose into new perspectives are promoted. This channel of mass media and communication also exposes all users to new and fast trends. Content creators also influence this change and are beginning to shape the fashion industry through new understandings of inclusivity and diverse acceptance. It’s no secret social media has and continues to change fashion and influence trends and now thanks to body acceptance and the promotion of beauty in differences, fashion has been able to tether itself to this idea.
In the offline world, we have seen the way advertising has promoted fashion houses and brands through public areas. This form of branding produced an out of reach mirror and many companies branded themselves through desirability that often can only be met by a set minority.
However, through the universal presence of social media, the desirability of exclusivity and access has caved in on itself. Through Instagram, everyone received access to the front-of-the-line for fashion. Opinions became much more open-minded and as we begin to spend more and more time connected through these apps our perspectives remain open and receptive to the new and unique changes that come with fashion.
Inclusivity can be seen through story highlights or influencers. Live streams have also made a large impact in promoting this idea and with these doors open the universally past understanding of division begins to fade away. Instagram created a major fashion community pushing fashion first through their shop tab on the app.
Other media such as TikTok and Clubhouse have started to add to this momentum. These major players produce an algorithm that is content fixed on your interests meaning your fashion and style is understood. These new networks offer a more international community with content from all over the world being offered and less fixed like on Instagram.
As the pandemic took over so did social media usage and TikTok is no stranger to this success. Their impact on fashion culture created tribes of their own style with popular mentions such as E-Girl, Cottage Core, and many more. The fashion community on TikTok has made it so much easier for users to find creators that like the same styles as them while promoting similar fashion to open the scope of what inspires what they wear. TikTok honors subcultures and exists to celebrate and promote these communities. Going viral is also incredibly easy, something Instagram can’t claim.
Clubhouse is another app that has inspired a link between important people and normal users. It has put fashion consumers and students on the same platform as editors and designers. This cross-communication is one that seems impossible on Instagram and has rooted this modern idea of inclusivity. Through conference calls and fashion-focused rooms with roundtables on inclusivity and trend news, there is an enthusiasm and demand for fashion that is diverse. These open conversations and dialogues have made Clubhouse a must-have app for anyone in the fashion industry due to its new form of delivering knowledge.
While Instagram has been the blueprint for reinventing the fashion industry other platforms have taken after this understanding and created space for everyone to get a word in. Encouraging new appreciation for difference leads to ethical conversations and new ways of thinking and this is what will be changing the fashion industry for the best.
