How Spending $500 on Balloons Landed Us a New Client
Written by Sharon Brand
Hi to our lovely community. You guys have been here since the very beginning and if not, welcome. It’s the first time in 3 years I am writing a blog on here and not going to lie, it feels good to take this time to share this incredibly fun story. You ready?
BMG turned 4 on May 1st and it was impossible to not celebrate this milestone. Since 2020, I have been working tirelessly day and night to grow this business and when I look back at all of our team’s achievements, I knew I wanted to mark the day with something special. On May 6th, I threw an event… or an anniversary for my business baby.
With the help of our former Brand Coordinator, Serena, the list went on of everything we had to purchase to make this event happen. To tell you the truth, it even made me a little anxious because of all the spendings this was going to be. When you’re a small business, every cost is important. On the other hand, I knew this was a one-time party we wanted to throw and I didn’t want to be cheap around it because I knew the potential it would have to bring our community together.
One thing you all need to know is that from the years building the business, I have moved 4 times, to 3 different countries. We have built an incredible inspiring network of talented creatives from all around the world. I wanted to make sure people felt welcomed, at ease and had a good cocktail in hand.
Ok, back to the purchases! One thing I always thought (and still think is) important are first impressions. Either an Instagram feed or, you guessed it, walking into a party, I wanted people to be wow-ed. That’s why we decided to get 500$ worth of metallic and pearl balloons.
When I clicked complete payment and put it in the credit card number in, I was worried. 500$ worth of balloons. What kind of luxury is that? How did I get lucky that I can spend this amount on… balloons. I’ll skip to the best part: the balloons did have the wow-effect we were looking for and we landed a client walking in the Old Port with them.
After the party, my team and I were cleaning up and I asked them to bring the balloons into our office. During that 7 minute walk, our Social Media Coordinator told me that someone stopped them in the street to take a picture. They were hard not to spot.
Those people asked what we do, followed us on Instagram and sent us a message the morning after saying they have been looking for a social media agency for awhile now.
And 30 days later, we signed with them.
I still smile and laugh thinking about this story. Our clients have always come from referral or direct personal connections. It’s the first time real, traditional marketing (I’m talking like before ads were even ads) worked and I believe it’s because we did it in an organic way. My team walked around Montreal, not to look for clients. I got the balloons, not to get new clients. The idea of having a party, wasn’t to get more clients. All this to say, when you stay align on who you are and why you do the things you do, great comes out from it.
