2022: Big Changes In Social Media This Year
Written by Alanna Moore
2022 was a big year for social media. As we all know by now, there’s a new update in the social media industry daily, if not hourly. Since it can be hard to remember everything that has changed in a year, we made a round-up of big changes in social media in 2022.
Elon Musk Bought Twitter
This is hands down one of the biggest updates we saw this year — and I’m sure many haven’t forgotten it. The process for Musk’s acquisition of Twitter began in April 2022 and as of October 28, he officially owned the app, which he bought for approximately $44 billion.
BeReal Gained Immense Popularity
Although created in 2020, BeReal started gaining serious popularity this year. According to Online Optimism, BeReal was installed over 53 million times worldwide by October 2022.
Instagram Became All About Reels
The millions of Instagram users out there know that as of this year, Instagram decided it’s out with the photos and in with the video content — especially if you’re looking to grow your Instagram account and have your content noticed on the app. Wondering how you can use Instagram Reels to your benefit? TikTok Introduced LIVE Subscriptions
In May 2022, TikTok implemented a new feature: LIVE subscriptions, “a monthly subscription on TikTok for people to show their appreciation for their favorite LIVE creators.” Subscribers benefit from subscriptions by getting subscriber badges, custom emotes, and access to subscriber-only chats, and creators get to earn a predictable income each month. So it’s a win-win for creators and viewers.
